Quickies

Some quick illustrations I did over the weekend. Hopefully part of an ongoing larger series, they're all 6.5"x7.5" so they're relatively quick to draw and color.

A Smattering of Editorial Work

I'm starting to really enjoy the one week deadlines a lot of magazines have for illustrations. It really forces you to think on your feet and not over analyze what you're working on. Here's some recent stuff:

The Ghosts of Projects Past

A couple images for a project that never fully came to fruition, which is too bad. C'est la vie!

My sister was kind enough to hold these drawings up so I could take a picture of them. Thanks sis!

Shout Out

One of my former instructors and all around good guy, Mike Kerr, did a brief write up about me on his new blog. The blog covers professionals working in all aspects of the visual arts and has some great interviews. Go see:

TRIM22

A spot illustration for a medical magazine published out of Edmonton. The article was about a new AIDS treatment in which a gene by the name of TRIM22 is turned against the virus and attacks it. I imagine that gene probably looks like some old school leatherheads.

Skim Milk

Another illustration for Swerve magazine this time concerning the Canadian election and comparing politicians to drinks that seem to match their personality and political platform.

Bar Apartments

An illustration for Swerve magazine to accompany a story about bar apartments (fantasy bars you invent that inhabit apartment buildings). It was a great story, which made for a fun image.

Paintings

Some paintings I did over the dog days of summer. Acrylic on board, just experimenting really.

Azeda Booth

So it wasn't too long after I had completed the six drawings shown in my last post (1-6) that a fine young chap by the name of Marc Rimmer contacted me to create some gig posters for his band Azeda Booth. He wanted them to be black and white so I pitched the already completed drawings, added some hand drawn type (from both myself and Marc) and the rest is history. They even liked the image so much they made a t-shirt to go along with the posters (those are the handsome fellows from the band modeling them in the picture). Be sure to go check out their myspace page and their website. They're awesome, I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy...

1-6

Sorry about the utter lack of updates, my life has been in a persistent state of turmoil since mid summer. Here are some simple black ink drawings that are part of a larger body of work. Each drawing is about 9"x12" and is on stonehenge paper, they are untitled but I'm numbering them in the order they are completed.

BeatRoute Cover.

Portrait of Frank Black as the mythological Irish hero Cuchulainn, going to be used as the cover of BeatRoute, a great local music magazine here in Calgary. The illustration had a really tight deadline, which turned out to be a lot of fun and a great challenge.

Of Montreal Poster

I got to do a poster for the band Of Montreal to promote the Sled Island Music Festival held here in Calgary. The poster is a 3 color silkscreen (two opaque colors and one translucent) and is around the 16x22 mark... I'll post a picture of it once I get my hands on them.

Petting Zoo

WAX, an ad agency here in Calgary, contacted me a while back about doing a series of zoo animals hurting children in a very subtle manner. They're to be used as a spec. project promoting the Calgary petting zoo which is run out of some farmer's market somewhere in the city. WAX does really fantastic work, they were really laid back the whole time and I can't wait to see the finished product with the designs.

Work/Life

Some of my fellow illustrator friends and I are being published in an awesome looking book titled Work/Life. The book was developed and designed by Janine Vangool and is essentially a look into the daily lives of Canadian illustrators and freelance photographers. The book launches to the public on Thursday June 5th so you should get down to Uppercase gallery in Art Central (see the link on Janine's name for location) where the featured artists have work from the book on display. You can also check out a preview of the book here.

Here is my piece I submitted for the book. Hooray for self deprecation!
